Student of the Month Story

Who - Skyler Bendt
What - Student Of The Month
Where - James Bowie High School
When - April, 2015
Why/How - Skyler's outstanding behavior in class

Skyler Bendt, a freshman at James Bowie High School, has been elected as student of the month this April. She has succeeded outstanding levels of leadership and exemplary behavior in all of her classes.
Skyler has made all A's, no absences, and is in every club available to freshman. So far, she's starting off her career with a great boost. 2015 is going to a big year for her, especially as student of the month in the last six weeks.
The fifteen year old was named  Student Of the Month by the Bowie Administration on April 2nd, to ensure it was no joke. "She has every quality of a strong leader. She helps other maintain themselves whilst maintaining herself," Said the photojournalism teacher Mr. Michael Reeves, shortly after Bendt was elected.
Bendt intend on using her authority to make the school a better place for all the students at JBHS, both upper and underclassmen. "I hope to raise a lot more money for the school," Says Bendt, while at work during her free off period. "We have a very tight budget, and some departments need more supplies, such as maths needing rulers and sciences needing lab supplies."( Skyler Bendt, April 21st, 2015)
With a lot of friends and a lot of teacher acquaintances, Skyler's ambitions may not be too hard to reach. "She's a smart young girl," Said Mr. Kane, principal of the school. "She'll go far."

Nut Graf

A "Nut Graf", or Nutshell Paragraph, is often the third or fourth paragraph of a news story that hold the main news value. It's the "heart of a story", one could say. It doesn't list specific details, but it holds the basic values of the stories like Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How.

Readers say it's the most useful part of the composition, because it gives the most important part of the story to them in just a quick paragraph.

Architecture Preview 2

Casa Milà

Lights
Here the Casa Milà is shown in the evening with the display lights as well as a sunset igniting the rock it is built with. It makes the statues on the top look as if they are on fire, and the interior looks very warm and comfortable.

Patterns
Here, the architect made a pattern building upwards to create a mind boggling illusion as you look up, like a telescope to the sky. Each floor looks almost identical.

Surroundings
Here he have the whole view of the Casa Milà in Barcelona, Spain, on the corner of the street it is located on.  You can clearly see the hundreds of tourists coming to see the gargantuan piece.
Details
This is one of the many unique pieces atop the house, showing 13 faces of some serpent like creatures. Many more sculptures lay atop the huge house.

Angles & Shapes
Here, a photographer captures the whimsical shapes that Antoni Gaudí created for the house. As far as I know, none of the other buildings we were given to choose from looked as exuberant as this.

iPhone Photos

1. My favorite photo was the bubbles under the ice, catered with the reflection of the glacier on the ice above.
2. I am definitely surprised some of these were taken on a phone, I didn't know the camera had that many pixels.
3. I think the apps some of the photographers may have used (i.e., PicsArt, Afterlight, etc.), could have definitely effected the outcome of the photo. the image could have been heavily impacted and distorted without us knowing.
4. I should shoot in more natural lighting, and I should never zoom in.

El Guggenheim de Bilbao
The Architect of the Guggenheim is Frank Gehry
It was finished in late 1997
It is located in Bilbao, Spain
It is a public museum
The guggenheim took about $89,000,000 USD to complete
The Basque government suggested that a museum be built
I chose this building because it had the most unique design out of all of the choices to me.
Kunsthaus Graz
The Architect of this cubist piece is Peter Cook. It was finished in 2003.  It is located in Graz, Austria. It is a public museum open to all visitors. There is no known information on the cost of the project. It was built as the cultural capital of Europe for 2003, and it commemorates 1960's modernist style artwork. I chose this pice because it stood out to me as a rather odd building.
Casa Milà
The Casa Milà, more commonly referred to as La Pedrera, is located in Barcelona, Spain, and was built by the architect Antoni Gaudí between 1906 and 1910. Ever since 1984, it has been a World Heritage Site, but before, was private property to the Milà family. The entire mansion cost about 100,000 Pesetas. The building was created to that Pere Milà could show off his wealth flamboyantly to all of barcelona, with his new wife, a wealthy widow of an Indiano. I chose this building because the architecture is just purely beautiful. Gaudí was a very very talented architect and he finished his career with this building.

Casa do Penédo
The architect of the stone house is to this day unknown, ever since it was built in 1974.
It is located in Guimarães, Portugal. You can visit it, but it is owned by a man and his family.  there is no information on the construction of the house, but it was created as a rural escape for the family in the mid 70's. I chose this building because it reminded me of a modern day flinstones.
Norddeutsche Landesbank am Friedrichswall
The architect of this amazing building is Günter Behnisch. He had finished this building with his famous team in 2002, beginning in 1997. This Landesbank is located in Hannover, Germany. It is a corporate building that you can definitely visit, but you'd stick out like a sore thumb if you went inside and took photos like a tourist.  The project's cost has not been published publicly. I chose this building because even though Nord LB has existed over 200 years, they have a very modern and eccentric maze like building.

Sensory Overload Warmup

1. I think that Seymour is saying that we find our surroundings defined by what we have as supposed to what they're made of.
I agree with him.
I think this, for me, means that I should photo graph people with what they own to capture their personalities as supposed to capturing their surroundings.
2. I definitely did not want to visit this place. It seems to cluttered and busy for me and it seems like I would get a headache in the blink of an eye.
3. I feel like the children of these workers get a lot to do during the day, and their surroundings are very busy. I'm sure they treat their parent's work as a playground.
4. My favorite photo was the girl who was working in the kitchen utensils booth, and she seamlessly blended in with her surroundings. The only thing that made her noticeable was her short black hair and her exposed legs from her shorts.

Action Preview

1. I believe that this is part of a winning sports photography portfolio because it shows how much the football players rejoice in their game and it was taking with excellent composition; it tells a story and also shows the profession of photography.
2. The shutter speed of this photo is very high, so that the splash of the water could be captured.
3. This is definitely a key moment, it only lasted for a short period of time, and it definitely could have been planned (it probably was).
4. Advanced techniques present in this photo include

4. I think the photography was pretty lame, not everyone has been introduced to the ruled of photography. The photo taken of the boy playing soccer is phenomenal, though.

Student Life -
Student at JBHS Deborah Moreno joined the Latin band Son De Rey, a family owned band. As the youngest in the band, Moreno enjoys the young vibe she gives to the band. They add a "lasting flavor" to pop songs, making them sound more latino.

2a. My least favorite photo is of freshman Zaneb
  b. The rule of thirds was avoided
3. I would have included a photo of all of the runner ups in the competition.
4. I think that the angles were a strong point in the photography, but there were a lot of mergers.

Sports -
Junior at JBHS Brooke Landry is the highest ranked knife thrower in the world. She began at age five and has been doing it ever since. She was the first female to ever reach an expert score.

3. I would have chosen softball, seen as it is just beginning and is a fun sport to capture.
4. I think that the strongest point in this photo is the lighting, and the weakest is the camera angle.

Entertainment -

Other high school Newspapers

My favorite front page is the LH magazine 11-13-13, because it is eye catching and is there for a good cause. It is also the same one that immediately  grabbed my interest. I like the headline because it shows that smoking is an actual issue and that it needs to be addressed. There is only one story on this front page. All the newspapers have the name of the school on them, but not all of them have a ton of text/stories on them. These are definitely to similar to the real newspapers from around the world.

Broadsheets - The correspondant, the chieftain, and the lion's roar.

Tabloid - WHHS Chatterbox, Ladue Panorama, tjTODAY

NewsMagazine - West Side Story, The Squall, LH Magazine

Headlines - a heading at the top of an article or page in a newspaper or magazine

Sub-headlines - a heading given to a subsection of a piece of writing

Boxes - a section of printed things on a page

Photos - photographs on the newspaper

Teaser - a hint of what an upcoming article is about

Flag - The nameplate of a newspaper

Folios -  the number of each page together with the dateand the name of the newspaper

Captions - description of a photo placed next to it

Stories - a news report of any length

Bylines - a printed line accompanying a story

Jumps - a line identifying a page from which a story is continued from

Story Dividers - dividers, a pair of compasses, as used for dividing lines, measuring,etc

Screens - Above/Below the fold

Info-graphics - A visual image used to represent data

Masthead/Staff-box - The title of a newspaper

Front Pages of the World

My favorite newspaper front page is from "The Los Angeles Times" because everything is easy to read and the photos are taken very well.
My favorite headline is "New Voice, here to stay" because fit draws attention from the reader into the story, and goes well with the photo associated with it.
Almost all of the front pages have the same size of story text, size of main photo, and headline font.
Things that definitely vary are the size of the headline and title of the newspaper, as well as placement of the title and photos.

Magazine Cover Peer Review

This magazine is called CB and was made by Claudia in 4th period.
I absolutely love the composition of the photo. The text colors match the photo perfectly, and it looks like a genuine magazine.
Because the text matches so well, it is a little hard to read.
I chose this cover because it's obviously attractive, the vivid colors and all.
Yes, there is a bar code.
Yes, it makes it seem more like a real magazine.
It was definitely a portrait, mainly because I know the person in the photo and her name is not Claudia.

Prompt Shoot Peer Review

http://emmaphotojournalismblog.blogspot.com

I really loved your pause photo, I thought it represented the prompt very well and the angle it was taken at was very intriguing and neat.

I wasn't the biggest fan of your footprint photo, because I didn't feel that the feet were the focal point of the image.

Something I really love about your photos is that they are all taken from what seems like a student's perspective; time stopping, connection with friends, leaving school at the end of the day, etc. The brightness on all of your photos is on point, as well.

I believe that you could work on having a less cluttered background for your photos.

I think you did the best at portraying "The End"

I wasn't a fan of "Footprint"

welcome back assignment

This is one of the best photos of the year because it shows our popular music, and how our society is no longer run by white people.

This is one of the best photos of the year because it shows how humans fight for what they deserve; basic rights.

This is my favorite photo because it shows a powerful message through tear gas clouds and a woman fighting against police brutality and the avenging of Michael Brown's death.

5 prompts:

I think that the best song of 2014 was Blank Space by Taylor Swift. I chose this song because it is about Taylor's fight against the patriarchy and the media's sexist views against her. She does an excellent job with her punch backs and how the media complains about her long lists of exes, and she had none of it.
I think Michael Brown is the most important person of the year. He set off our nation into a zone of knowledge of what is really happening, the white privilege, and the lack of repercussions for police brutality.
I think the most important news story was the death of Michael Brown. It sparked a flame of revolution in america, one that needed to happen. Police brutality is a major issue in america and still is, and Michael Brown's death brought it to light.
The best movie of 2014 was probably Guardians Of The Galaxy, because it was the best Marvel movie to come out to come out this year. It gained extraordinary box office ratings, and some theaters are still playing it after its release in august.
I think the most important entertainment person of 2014 is Robin Williams. A living man who has brought smiles to multiple generations was lost last year, and he should not be forgotten. He suffered quietly, and his death should not be put aside.

On my vacation, I went back to where I used to live and visited my old best friends Tyler and Leia, and we spent New Years together. It was fantastic!

In 2015, I am going to try to be a bit more proactive with theatre at JBHS and in Austin locally.

In 2105, I look forward to seeing the new avengers movie coming out in May.
