This is a photo taken in Death Valley. It's my favorite out of the top 45 because of the cool purple blending with the warm pinks, and the center focus of the lightning across the long plain. The photo has a lovely palette of colors and is something I'd wish to experience in real life.
If I were to enter a photo into this National Geographic contest, I'd go into the mountains of mid/northern california and capture the fog over the layers of redwoods in a dense forest.
